What Constitutes A Biscuit?

5 October 2007

clearly not a biscuit.Myself and my associates have had many a debate over what exactly constitutes a biscuit (see this post). We all know the grey areas, i.e. Kit Kats, Twixes etc, but opinion is always varied and a concensus never reached.

The excellent Nicecupofteandasitdown.com makes a decent attempt at exploring the taxonomy of biscuits, however, it does make the controversial claim that the jaffa is not actually a biscuit. This is not something I can say I agree with, although their comments on Nice biscuits are spot on.

Perhaps the major manufacturers could get together and publish a definitive biscuit bible which clears this up once and for all? Or maybe it should always be left to individual interpretation. After all, if I choose to believe that a Tracker Bar is a biscuit (which it clearly isn’t, I am not insane) then who has the right to tell me otherwise.

Food for thought as they say.

McFadden Is Superman

5 October 2007

We all knew he had special ability with a ball, but it looks like James McFadden has now developed super-human powers which allow him to fly through defenders :-D

mcfadden

Great to see Faddy on the score sheet again last night, his 6th goal of the season. Keep it up Jamesy!

Drinking On A School Night

5 October 2007

Myself and The German overindulged somewhat last night and are suffering the consequences this morning. Drinking on a school night is never advisable.

Started the day with a trip to the local van for a roll and sausage and egg. The girl that served me looked a little like Nelly Furtado. When I say a little I really do mean not much at all. In fact if I was discussing with a fellow hung over breakfaster I would probably say something like “You know, she looks absolutely nothing like Nelly Furtado” and he would would probably agree “Neither she does, uncanny”. The roll incidentally was excellent.

I am too unwell at the moment to write any further ramblings. Time for another cup of tea I think, and perhaps a jaffa cake. Mmmm, jaffa cakes….

While I’m on the subject of Postman Pat, this is quality. Enjoy!

Another Postal Strike

4 October 2007

Justice for jessOk, it’s been at least ten years since I last saw it, but somehow I just don’t seem to recall Postman Pat starting with: -

“Another sunny day in Greendale and Pat arrives as usual at Mrs Goggins Post Office around 6.30am. The birds are singing in the trees, Farmer Fogg is out milking the cows, everything seems normal in this quiet little village. This morning however there is a difference.

Pat won’t be picking up all the post bags in his van. There will be no knocks, no rings, no letters through Reverend Timms’, Sam Waldron’s or anyone elses doors this morning. This morning the only thing Pat will be attempting to deliver is the clear message that he will not be accepting Royal Mail’s 2.5% pay offer. Neither will he be accepting their modernisation plans, which he says will put his, Pat Clifton’s and 40,000 other Royal Mail employees jobs at risk.”

Yes, today marks the start of another 48 hour strike by postal workers, with a further 48 hour strike starting on Monday. Consequently, any mail sent today is unlikely to arrive before next Thursday at the earliest.

Obviously this is a disaster for businesses which rely on the post office to deliver small orders and our site Girls Night will be hit badly. The only alternative we have is to send out every order by courier, which will cost a fortune and is totally impractical for low value items.

The bad news is that the CWU (Communication Workers Union) are now talking about rolling strikes every Monday until the situation is resolved, so we could be looking at disruption for the foreseeable future. From experience of the last strikes in August it normally takes them a couple of weeks to get through the backlog after a strike, so we really could be looking at a situation from which The Royal Mail will never fully recover.

Bad news all round for business and we can look forward to at best a week of fielding phone calls from angry customers looking for their orders. At worst, consumer confidence could be seriously affected by the strikes, resulting in a significant drop in sales, which as we are now in the important final quarter leading up to Christmas would be a disaster.

Troubled times in Greendale.

Scotland v Italy Ticket

3 October 2007

After a couple of frustrating days trying to get through on the phone and through the SSC website, I finally managed to order my ticket for Scotland v Italy this afternoon. Section D3 in the North Stand, which is a prime spot.

With the Lithuania home game, the game in Paris, Ukraine at Hampden next month and now Italy in November it seems that I am spending half of my life (and a good percentage of my bank balance) at the moment sorting out Scotland tickets. The games really are coming thick and fast, but it will all be worth it if we can get the 6 or 7 points we need to qualify for Euro 2008.

2 wins and six points will do us if one of the wins comes against Italy at Hampden, but we may need 7 if that game is a draw - depending on how the French get on in the Ukraine. 7 points guarantees us qualification as group winners, regardless on any other results.

It really is going to go down to the wire and hopefully we will have qualification assured after the Italy game on the Saturday as I don’t think my nerves can take a night in front of the telly on the Wednesday praying for Ukraine or The Faroes to do us a favour. Que sera sera though as they say and first things first, bring on the Ukraine!

The squad for the Ukraine and Georgia games was also announced today with no real surprise inclusions. Good to see the legend that is Christian Dailly back in and recalls for Kenny Miller and Gary Naysmith after injury had ruled them out of the Lithuania/France double header. No Darren Fletcher as he is out of action for 6 weeks after picking up an injury in Paris. Hopefully there are no more injury worries over the next week or so and everyone reports fit and ready for action.

Saving My Face - KT Tunstall

3 October 2007

KT TunstallKT Tunstall’s next single “Saving My Face” has been on Virgin Radio a couple of times today. Great song, which really hooks you in on first listen and just gets better every time you hear it.

Following on from the also excellent Hold On, the first single from Drastic Fantastic, it looks like KT is keeping up the high standard of her debut album Eye To The Telescope. I’ve yet to get hold of a copy of the new album, but will probably buy a copy over the weekend.

She’s definitely one of the best artists around at the moment and I’ll need to catch her live at some point.

On a slight tangent I’m a bit gutted as an email I sent into Virgin Radio yesterday regarding the fabulous Tea Spinner was read out by Suggs this afternoon. Unfortunately I missed it as I was over at the Post Office purchasing a Wispa to accompany my afternoon tea. On a more positive note, the Wispa was exceptional.

King Of Bebo’s Time Up?

3 October 2007

Worrying news from America where a serial killer has already killed up to 5 people. Reports are that he is now heading to Europe and perhaps even for Glasgow.

Could The King Of Bebo be next? This news report from WPFX News seems to suggest so…

Return of the Wispa

3 October 2007

Chocolate lovers may be aware that Cadbury have bowed to pressure from the internet community and have relaunched the Wispa bar, which disappeared from our shelves 4 years ago.

The Wispa was first introduced as a trial bar in 1981 and proved to be highly successul, prompting a full national release in 1983. It was Cadbury’s answer to Nestle’s Aero. Sadly, after declining sales througout the 90’s, Cabury’s pulled the bar from their range in 2003, replacing it with “Dairy Milk Bubbly”. A black day for chocolate lovers.

The good news is that the Wispa is back, again in limited edition, and if it proves successful, then Cadbury’s may re-introduce it fully into their range. A case of history repeating.

According to Cadbury’s The Wispa bars are not supposed to be released until the 8th of October, however, last evening I found a box of them on sale in Sainsbury’s, Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow. I snapped up two and am pleased to say they taste every bit as good today as they did in their 80’s heyday. A bubbly delight.

So Wispa lovers out there, get buying and lets make sure the Wispa is back for good!

More information at the Cadbury’s Wispa Micro Site. Happy days indeed.

It’s Your Turn To Make The Tea

2 October 2007

We take our tea breaks very seriously in Thin Denim. After all, your brain needs a rest from the hard work of cracking one liners, avoiding phone calls and creating funny photoshops.

Until recently we had countless arguments over whose turn it was to make the teas (or coffees). That is until the ingenious Tea Spinner from Suggs at Virgin Radio. Just enter the names of those who want tea and the Tea Spinner will randomly (correct use of the word beboers!) choose who should perform the tea making task.

All we need now is a biscuit spinner to choose between Jaffas and Digestives and our life will be simple. Now back to creating funny photoshops….

It’s your turn to make the tea
